BACKSTORY

Rochambeau is a New York based brand produced by New Yorkers. For Spring 2012, Laurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper were inspired by familiar territory. NYC is defined by the people that inhabit it and therefore enriched by the mass culture that it bleeds. The city is defined by street, a foot highway of culture and an accumulation of individuals that build up a mass pulse. As often as it is referenced within it's 'cultural representation', rarely do we see it dissected, broken down to the specific individuals whom define the beauty. It is these characters that decorate the corners and spill out into the open, those responsible for defining our city streets from all others. These often 'invisible' folks hide with in our subconscious, a constant reminder of the colorful experiences we encounter block by block.

This beauty and love of the city is what we would like to touch... A portrait.... an expansion of that split second with a shadow that drags on... drags down into the world of street, the streets of New York City....
CONCEPT

When discussions began with the guys behind the Rochambeau, the idea of how to trump the ever present imagery was at hand. The idea for a 'fashion film' had been kicked around in numerous forms. Unfortunately the ever repeating aesthetic of these left everyone in a negative way. Often these shorts are shot on the sideline or in between during still photo productions, plastered with stacks of effects exhibiting models posing in and out of their own layered reflection while their hair blows in reverse. It was these particular creations that inspired the desire to take it out and into the real. It was a run for the opposite end of the spectrum, a desire to stretch out the idea of a moving portrait, create a pulse, tap into the chaos of the city that so many claim connection. The goal was to create something real, something I can believe in... something I feel I could touch, smell, or hear. Narrative?..... Imagination. Observation. The narrative exits in the ever spinning whirl wind of that chaos passing by. Fashion... here is a short about fashion, fashion in the city, New York City.- Hugh Lippe

In 1975 Oakley changed the entire game with a simple handlebar grip. With a need for something more prominent to put his “O” logo on, Founder Jim Jannard turned to goggles for the bigger real estate on the strap…and the rest is optical history .35 years later, Oakley is the leader in optical performance—bar none.

Oakley asked Staple Design in late 2009 to help them celebrate this momentous occasion. After all, Oakley was born in 1975. I was born in 1975. The stars were aligned as they say.
So we’re proud to announce “The History Of Oakley by Staple Design”. This will be a 6-piece collection that’ll drop over the next few months, beginning July 13th along with a special event at Reed Space.

Michael Angelo’s Lipstick Portraits

I usually don’t have the guts to wear red lipstick—but when the mood to go rouge strikes, it's as though I’ve been granted a temporary V.I.P. pass into the world of bold, carefree women. Unfortunately, not everyone feels this freedom when wearing red lipstick—particularly in Cambodia, where young girls in brothels are forced to wear the product as a marker of their sexual enslavement. To dispel this negativity and celebrate red lipstick’s more liberating qualities, beauty guru turned artist Michael Angelo is launching “The Lipstick Portraits,” a photo exhibition where 100 percent of proceeds from prints, catalogues, and t-shirts will benefit the Somaly Mam Foundation, a non-profit organization working to abolish global human enslavement.

Using red lipstick as a unifying motif and metaphor for freedom, Angelo’s portraits feature 60 men and women wearing the timeless lipstick color. Subjects include ELLE Make Better DVD star Brooklyn Decker and femme fatale Dita Von Teese (shown below), as well as Simon Doonan, Susan Sarandon, Alan Cumming, and Selita Ebanks. The Symbiotic Business Cycle Of New York’s Rochambeau x Proof 7

Rochambeau is Egyptian for the childhood game of rock-paper-scissors, a name that seems to mirror the dynamic trio of creatives who created the fashion label, but was actually chosen as emblematic of the concept of chance. They met in 2007 at a Parsons senior thesis show, bonding over a passion for design and distinctive visions on how they wanted to contribute to the future of menswear design. Michael Velker, the label’s Creative Director back then had just won the Golden Thimble Award at the prestigious art college, graduating to work with esteemed high-end brands such as Marc Jacobs, Helmut Lang and Ermenegildo Zegna. Connecting with Joshua Cooper and Laurence Chandler, Directors at print production agency, Proof 7, Rochambeau has been hailed as one of the critically acclaimed fashion labels to be released today.

PSFK talks to Laurence Chandler about what it means to run one of New York’s most progressive printing companies, simultaneously launching a menswear fashion brand in an increasingly chaotic landscape.

We constructed using leather covers, dyed papyrus, Finchs, Mohawks, coated and uncoated, rice papers, Zimbabwe bamboos, African tribal cloth, furs, vintage aged wax paper, turn of the century inks and oil, lace paper, 1930's butcher paper - each page hand treated with paints, foils, crayon, pastels, African acrylics, wire, sandpaper, string, then beaten, stretched, burned, stamped, laminated, glued, ripped, and FINALLY hand stitched with hemp to create.

As part of recognizing BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department Chair Richard Wilde's 40th anniversary at the College, SVA is presenting "The Wilde Years: Four Decades of Shaping Visual Culture," an exhibition that celebrates designers, art directors and other creative professionals who have graduated from the program. The show, which is on view at the Visual Arts Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th floor, features iconic and culturally significant works by select alumni from all four decades of Wilde's tenure.

"It is an honor to be recognized," says Wilde. "I am inspired by these alumni and proud of their accomplishments. Many have become some of the most influential and creative people working in the business today." Designed by Kevin O'Callaghan, chair of 3D Design, the multimedia exhibition space of "The Wilde Years" places familiar advertisements, book covers, CD packaging and posters within everyday settings: a comfortable reading nook will highlight book jacket design and feature covers for James Frey's A Million Little Pieces, Hillary Rodham Clinton's Living History and Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, among other bestsellers; subway advertisements, including theatrical posters for Broadway hits like Rent, Chicago and John Leguizamo's Freak, will be on view within a mock subway platform; a life-size bus shelter will include advertising campaigns for Anheuser-Busch, Pepsi and Showtime; and a mini-screening room will project television commercials and music videos. In total, the work of over 100 alumni is represented in "The Wilde Years," selected by a curatorial committee comprised of Gail Anderson, creative director, SpotCo; Sal DeVito, executive creative director, DeVito/Verdi; Janet Froelich, creative director, Real Simple; Todd Radom, principal, Todd Radom Design; and Lisa Rettig-Falcone, group creative director, DDB Worldwide.

"The Wilde Years" will be at the Visual Arts Gallery through Saturday, November 7; there will be a reception open to the public on Monday, October 19, 5:30 - 7pm. Anthony Pappalardo: Virgin White

Professional skateboarder Anthony Pappalardo will show his furniture design and art in his first solo exhibition entitled "Virgin White" at Brooklyn's inimitable shop and gallery The Future Perfect.

Curated by redstr/collective, Pappalardo's collection of handmade stools and tables are cut from a variety of both common and exotic woods. A fairly laborious process, Pappalardo crafts each piece using mostly small blocks. The result are works with meticulous parquet finishes and well-crafted, sturdy designs (see images above). His focus on the visual effect of joining different grains of lumber adds to the work. He's not a bad skater too (see video below). We like his relaxed, nonchalant style.

Richard Meier: Architect Volume 5

In celebration of Richard Meier Studio’s 45th anniversary, Rizzoli new monograph looks at the Pritzker Prize-winning American architect's recent work. Titled "Richard Meier Architect Volume 5," this latest volume reveals that time hast slowed Meier down at all.

Focusing on his work between 2004 and 2009, the book offers a thorough and intimate understanding of Meier’s style—particularly the qualities of light and fluidity across a variety of project sizes—through case studies, photographs, illustrations, renderings and drawings of his recent work. The book (which, incidentally, another American master: Massimo Vignelli designed) includes 32 residential, commercial and civic projects—including the Arp Museum in Germany, the Broad Art Center in UCLA, the San Jose City Hall, new master plans for Newark, New Jersey and Manhattan’s East Side, as well as the highly-publicized On Prospect Park, a Brooklyn glass tower, which—after much debate regarding the residential building's aesthetic fit for the existing neighborhood—opened 11 months ago only to face the brutalities of the recession.

With the volumes coming in red, blue, orange, violet, green, yellow, maroon, blue green, light green, ochre, light purple, light grey, dark blue, pink, yellow green, purple, light orange, red violet, light yellow, silver, light blue, grey, gold, white, and black, it's only when they're combined that they could create countless images.
